Internet Connectivity The first Tanzanian Internet service providers (ISPs) launched their services in 1996. The national regulator issued three licenses for a period of up to ten years. According to ITU's "World Telecommunication Indicators 2000/2001" there were only 218 Internet hosts in Tanzania in 1999 (USA: 53.175.956 hosts). The total number of computers came to 80.000. The UN Economic Commission for Africa estimated the number of Internet users at 3.000 for 1999 (0.94 per 10.000 inhabitants). In January 2001, there were 816 domains registered with the country ending .tz (source: Internet Software Consortium). |
