Press Gags and Broadcasting Regulations Although Tanzania has adopted an multiparty-system on July 1st 1992, the government still uses draconian laws to control the media. The Newspaper Act of 1976 empowers the government to ban publications without a warrant. Moreover, any author, editior, and distributor of seditious material is liable to criminal prosecution. The Tanzania Broadcasting Commission (TBC), which was established through the Broadcasting Services Act of 1993, issues and revokes licenses for and from radio and TV stations. The decisions of the TBC have often a highly subjective character. Latest Media Alerts |
